Later when the Mughal capital was in Agra, the fortress was the seat of government. It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty until 1638, when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi.

I was glad we visited the Agra Fort first to have a better appreciation for it. Construction of this UNESCO World Heritage site began in 1565 by Emperor Akbar.
